In 2003 Clare Pain and her colleagues at Addis Ababa University (AAU), Ethiopia, formed a partnership between their Departments of Psychiatry in order to open the first residency training program in psychiatry in Ethiopia. The model, known as the Toronto Addis Ababa Psychiatry Project – TAAPP, proved successful and produced a workable, effective educational model for accelerating the creation of medical specialists in Ethiopia that is now embraced by AAU as the preferred model of partnering, and involves over 20 such partnerships between different faculties, departments, and divisions at the two universities (medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, engineering, law, and arts and sciences). To date there has been a 95% retention rate of these graduates in Ethiopia and TAAPP is now the flagship partnership at the University of Toronto. Since 2012 Clare has received three grants from Grand Challenges for over $1 million to integrate mental health services into primary health care.
